Join us for a Celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day! Four guest speakers open the exhibition on Saturday, Mar. 14, 2009, 6:00 to 9:00 pm to discuss the worldwide problem of one in every three women subject to violence: Ann Simonton, former top fashion model and now an international authority on the medias role in reinforcing violence against women;

Join us for a Celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day! Amnesty International San Jose Group 35 and Works/ San José community art and performance center, have teamed up to tell the stories of women facing and overcoming violence worldwide through the works of local and international artists.

Four guest speakers open the exhibition on Saturday, Mar. 14, 2009, 6:00 to 9:00 pm to discuss the worldwide problem of one in every three women subject to violence: Ann Simonton, former top fashion model and now an international authority on the media’s role in reinforcing violence against women; Amnesty International’s Elsie De Laere, who will share her role as a specialist on violence against women in Afghanistan with the organization; Artist Angel Daniels, who will discuss art as a medium for creating awareness about violence towards women, and Guest musician Marilee Buster.

WHEN:March 14-March 21, 2009; Opening Reception will be 6-9pm on Saturday March 14th! ($10 donation suggested)

WHERE: WORKS/San Jose at 451 S. First Street, San Jose, CA 95113

Gallery admission for opening night suggests a minimum donation of $10, and is free the rest of the week. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit: Cardea Center for Women, San Jose Peace and Justice Center, Kavosh Women’s Organization and the Santa Clara County Council of Churches.

We had an amazing opening! Thanks to everyone who participated! At the end of the night, we counted over 800 people having walked through the door. Even adjusting for people re-entering the gallery after leaving for a while, this is still a record high turnout for a members’ exhibit opening night. Thank you again! Please continue to bring your friends out to the gallery to see this amazing collection of community art.
