Set in a New York police department where police are baffled by the identity of a serial killer, the show has a cast of six, one of whom is revealed at the end to be the man – or woman – they have been looking for. Suspenseful, fast-paced and edgy, the show will keep an audience guessing right up to the final showdown.

The Zahsman Murders is part of the ‘Sparklight Play Development Series’, created by Arclight to nurture and develop new Bay Area voices in the theatre.  Sparklight provides emerging playwrights with the opportunity to refine their scripts through initial readings, feedback from the actors, directors and designers, and through post-show discussions with the audience, which can often lead to lively and invaluable dialogues.

The show will be staged at WORKS/San Jose as part of a community partnership with Arclight. This deliberately intimate gallery setting will place the audience in the world of the play, where they will preside like members of a jury while motives and evidence are presented to them, clues are examined, and the murderer is finally exposed.  Multimedia elements will be used in lieu of exposition to acquaint the audience with the history of the Zahsman murders and engage them directly in the shadowy world inhabited by the serial killer.

You are invited to participate in the 2010 Members’ exhibition at Works/San José, your community art and performance center. The exhibition, entitled Ring in the New, will open with a reception on First Friday, December 3 and close with a member party and annual meeting on First Friday January 7, both events from 7pm to 10pm.

Each member of Works is invited to place one work of art into the exhibition, your single piece must be ready-to-hang (framed/mounted with all hanging hardware). Space is limited for this popular exhibition and we must limit wall pieces to 24 inches in width by 24 inches in height; and sculptural pieces to 24 inches in width and depth. Please include instructions for pedestals, suspensions, or any other special display requests. please also provide a resume and artist statement.

All work must be hand-delivered to 451 South 1st Street on Thursday, November 18, noon to 4pm; or Friday November 19, noon to 6pm. or Saturdays, November 20 and 27, noon to 4pm. The exhibition entry form and exhibition agreement can be completed when you deliver your work or can be downloaded from this site soon. Performance artists who would like to present a work during one of the receptions must provide a description by 4pm november 27.

My Favorite Nightmares

Nightmares. As creepy or repulsive as they may be, they fascinate us. They linger in our minds long after we’ve woken, leaving us distracted by thoughts of otherworldly fears. It is often the strange things that play in our heads at night that inspire us to create upon waking. Sometimes these unsettling dreams are rearranged from the events of our daily lives; our brains p…utting them into a senseless order, helping us to see our thoughts from an inside out perspective. Other dreams seem to make no sense at all and yet perhaps it is this “otherness” that causes us to dwell, at times giving rise to an almost a manic need to recreate the scenes that dance across our sleeping eyes, if only to have some relief once the images have been transferred to the canvas.

When we celebrate the bizarre terrors which overtake us in our sleep we are able to see what base fears we share. This will be a show of real and imagined nightmares, monsters, things that go bump in the night or cause us to gasp awake. The reoccurring night terrors that we just can’t get enough of. An admission that we kind of like to be scared.

This exhibition organically grew out of WordsPaintingMusic and Left Coast Live, two events that provided community artists with a platform to express their creativity in a collaborate and larger format. While a mural usually is defined as an artwork that fits the contours of a building, wall, or structure, a mural can now also be defined in a wider context. The free standing boards and the wide range of interpretations from various artists on what constitutes a ‘mural’ are examples of that expansion.

As artists worked in the gallery, a sense of play and engaging collaboration evolved that does not exist in a solo studio environment. Artists, by the nature of the artistic process, are relegated to solitude, but most like to be social and so the various teams that formed around each board as the art was in process made for more engaging and unexpected results, as instant critiques and suggestions were given in a manner of good will and generosity.

Individual murals also known as ‘signature murals’ were added to the mix. Great signature artists like Emigdio Vasquez and John Pugh, were the inspiration for adding works by local artists such as Ben Alexy, Francesca Lovecchio, and Paul J. Gonzalez. These three are San José artists whose artwork serves as a counterpoint to the collaborative pieces in the exhibition.

San José has a rich array of murals. Photographer Reuben Rutledge photographed many of the murals hidden in and around Silicon Valley for this exhibition. Many reflect an historical and cultural perspective, like one of the at the Mexican Heritage Plaza or the one facilitated by MACLA at the corner of Sunset and Alum Rock in East San José. Others reflect a more contemporary view of modern life.

The artists in this exhibit put in a lot of hours, and Works is proud to show the great effort that went into these murals. Although Silicon Valley has many murals, there is room for more, and the most compelling reason to see more of this genre is not just because it is culturally enriching, but because it facilitates dialogue between communities and artists.

WORKS/ San Jose is holding its 1st Annual “Out of State” Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition this weekend. The show acknowledges the culmination of four years of comprehensive study by students in the undergraduate Pictorial Art program at San Jose State University. Greetings! There is a lot of excitement in the gallery as we prepare for our benefit auction on Saturday night. Yes, this Saturday night, May 22nd! The final preview will be from 5-7, the mad bidding for fresh, hot art begins at 7 p.m. Why not arrive before 7 to find a parking place and get your bidder number and enjoy a final tour around the gallery before the competition heats up?

Female Found Mixed Media Contemporary Art, curated by Terenia Offenbacker, presents the work of eight women that create art together through weekly sessions for the past seven years. The materials used are common: paper, sand, metals, textiles, etc., but each artist works in a different creative way. Featured artists: Rosine Ferber, Ann Gordon, Camille Ball, Ricky Gumbrecht, Shuang Zhang, Sheryl Tealdi, Annette Legallet and Terenia Offenbacker.

This exhibit will be up until April 16th. Please note, the show will be briefly on hiatus March 25, 26, and 27 as Works will be hosting a presentation of The Importance of Being Earnest.

The Cardboard Box Theatre Project presents a seriously silly interpretation of Wilde’s delightfully absurd masterpiece. In this timelessly witty world where style, not substance, is the rule, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrief spend their days concocting alternate identities and fictional friends. But when the town and the country converge and romantic hijinks escalate, both men must discover how to be honestly Earnest.

First Friday was a powerful display of San Jose’s vibrant art scene. Artists and bidders all crowded into Works/San Jose to see the (anti)Valentine’s Day Auction and exhibition! Bidders jumped at the chance to buy amorous (and not so amourous) artworks by over 65 artists from the South Bay! Some works created such a buzz that bidding wars ensued, all with peaceful endings. How it Works:

All artwork will be available for bid at the silent auction at a starting bid of 20 dollars with minimum bid increments of 5 dollars. Bidders who want to buy a piece outright must meet the “Buy It Now” (retail) price set by the artist—recommended between $50 and $300. Artists can elect to receive up to 50 percent of the purchase price or can donate all proceeds to Works. On Saturday Afternoon at 12:01pm the exhausted participants of Noon2Noon-the 24 hour art marathon and fundraiser- were out of Works San Jose. We had just spent 24 hours of grueling, yet fruitful art making.

The First Friday December 4th Art Walk  visitors came to see our efforts. The entire evening was fun and full of memorable moments. Each booth was full of artists making art, selling art or teaching visitors how to make their own. The music that accompanied the visual arts was tight. Fontaine’s Muse created an amazing atmosphere and Haptic Synapses played an all too short set.  At least they hung around around to do some 1am noodling on the music box.

Our first annual Noon2Noon proved that the community is in support of the Arts in the Bay Area! We raised funds to keep up our programming including exhibitions, concerts, educational workshops and much much more! One new way to give to Works was a big success, Chip-In. Works/San Jose presents ‘noon2noon’–a 24 hour art marathon beginning at noon First Friday, December 4th and continuing until Saturday, December 5th. We are seeking teams or individual artists who will be sponsored during a lock-in to create art to sell in a benefit for works/san jose.

How do you get involved?

This exhibition and events presented by The South Bay Queer Arts Project (SBQAP) and Works/San Jose. All Proceeds benefit Works/San Jose and the Billy De Frank Community Center. The SBQAP’s mission is to create opportunities for Queer artists in the South Bay. The SBQAP is made up of queer artists, educators, non-profit professionals and activists who live and work in the South Bay.

Haptic Synapses came through again with another performance with additional guests. Tonight’s show was particularly strange because right down the street was the san jose zombie walk and outdoor showing of Shaun of the Dead, so we had a relatively huge crowd of zombies hanging out inside and right outside the door, all night. Global climate change has far reaching ramifications, and as a result the world as we know it will not be the world of 100 or perhaps even 10 years. Armed with an awareness of how our actions impact the environment, how will this affect our ideas about who we are? This was the question posed by CADRE New Media Lab at San Jose State University in an open call to artists earlier this summer.

From entries all over the world, six finalists were chosen. Leading artist Andrea Polli, seen at 01SJ 2008, will be exhibiting her work Sonic Antarctica We are also excited to feature the work Markers and 10,000-year journey by Xavier Cortada. Other works exploring the poles include Jerome Gueneau and Catherine Rannou, Phil Boissonnet, Andrea Juan, and Erika Blumenfeld. The jurors for the exhibit include surveillance artist Hasan Elaji, new media artist Robin Lasser and writer/curator Annick Bureaud.

Beginning August 7, Polar Identity can be experienced both online at SWITCH the online journal for art and technology, as well as at WORKS/San Jose. Throughout the event there will be public lectures and panels sponsored by ZERO1.

The Cardboard Box Theater Project is a newly formed South Bay theater company founded by Santa Clara University Alumni, dedicated to presentation of new works and old works in new ways! Beast Figurative is a show where artists will explore the animal element inside the figurative form: how the wild of the animal is inherent in our humanity, how it influences our lifestyle, how it is reflected in sports, politics, gender, religion, and mythology, and how we as working artists use this animal instinct and intuition to inform and visualize our emotional, psychological, and physical states.

The human figure is what ties this diverse group of artists together, but it is also the human condition, which will be portrayed in overt, sublime, and even abstract renditions.

In the context of this exhibition, “Beast” refers to that unfettered rage, heartbreak, sadness, joy, melancholy, and the powerful core that resides in each of us. It is the unbridled, unannounced, and intense creative inspiration that drives, fuels, and pushes our art to a creative zenith. Every artistic soul is a frozen sea—the beast resides beneath the surface.

January 31, 2009 – In its first exhibition for 2009, Works/San José will showcase the talents of Christian Midjo and Tarmo Pasto in “Through Scandinavian Eyes: A Look at the Midjo-Pasto Collection,” launching Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 pm at 451 S. First Street, San Jose, Calif.

The collection belongs to San Jose radiologist Dr. Matthew Pasto, oldest son of Tarmo Pasto, who acquired his father’s paintings, as well as Midjo’s. Since then, Dr. Pasto and his wife, Karyn Shaffner-Pasto, have worked to find ways to share the talents of these artists while supporting philanthropic efforts.

Norwegian-born Christian Midjo graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in Denmark, and by 1909 had made his way to Ithaca, New York, where he was to become professor at Cornell University.

Tarmo Pasto was born in Pennsylvania to Finnish parents in 1906, but it was at Cornell University—during his pursuit of pursuit of his Ph.D. in the 1940s—that he first met Midjo. The relationship quickly grew from instructor-apprentice to a deep friendship and their works reflect an ongoing dialogue even across the country.

By the mid-40s, Pasto had moved to California, and by 1948, he had become a professor of art and psychology at Sacramento State College (known today as California State University at Sacramento). Midjo had by that time retired from Cornell and moved to California where Pasto had built a studio for him.

By 1961, Midjo made his way back to Norway where he eventually died in 1973 at the age of 93. Pasto remained a resident of Sacramento through 1986 during which time he enjoyed wide recognition for his growing knowledge in psychology. Author of “The Space-Frame Experience in Art,” (1964), Pasto died in 1986.

“Works/San José is pleased to share with the community the visual dialogue that took place between these two artists,” says Will Smith, volunteer-Treasurer on Works’ board.

On Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, youth will be able to explore texture through a hands-on art activity from 12 noon to 2 pm. Works/San José is bringing back YFAC—youth and family art connection—in 2009, to give youth and their families another reason to enjoy the arts on the second Saturday of each month. Workshop admission will be free, but donations to the program are gratefully accepted.

“Once you begin hunting for textures, you will never look at anything around you in quite the same way,” says local art teacher and newest Works Board member, Brande Barrett. “This fun family activity is free, where you can make and take your own fine art home with you.”

Thanks to Barrett, Works/San José is able to re-introduce one of the weekend programs preferred among San Jose’s younger artists and art appreciators.

Free creative opportunities are provided at Works/ San Jose on the second Saturday of the month.

Explore texture through a hands-on art activity at Works/San Jose (451 S. First Street, San Jose). Led by local teacher, Brande Barrett, youth from ages 7-14 are encouraged to participate in this *free* fun-filled workshop.

Auction Supports Community Arts Scene, Raises Critical Funding for Volunteer Arts Organization!

Works/San José ’s long-awaited auction will take place at on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 451 South First St., San Jose, Calif. Bidding will begin promptly at 7 pm with the final preview at 5 pm.

With more than 100 pieces of art donated by scores of the area’s artists, exhibition of auction pieces will begin on Thursday, Nov. 20. As usual, admission is free, but bidder registration is $10 for Works members and $15 for others. (Proxy bidding will be available.)

“We’re encouraged by such a strong showing,” says Steve Cooley, President of Works’ volunteer board who spent countless hours developing an online database to store and feature auction items at www.workssanjose.org.

Works’ volunteer board members are looking forward to the event, which has historically represented a large part of the organization’s donor revenues. The organization hopes that some of the area’s coveted names will draw higher bids. By the same token, Works is also looking for adventurous art buyers who may end up with a solid investment from the area’s new or up-and-coming artists.

“Works/San José’s art auction has always been the South Bay’s most accessible. With regional artists everyone knows of to several you will be hearing about in the future–it’s definitely the most eclectic, and where the greatest deals are found. Some of the bidding will start in the two digits!” says long-time Works designer and current board member, Joe Miller.

Works/San José, which has in years past been the debut gallery for many Bay Area artists, is counting on members of the community to consider this fact when they appear at the auction.

“This holiday season, I hope people will remember that they’re not just buying art from a local artist, they are buying into a philanthropic share of the San Jose arts community. Over its 30 year history, Works/San José has not only helped define the arts in this community, but it has also helped artists challenge that definition and remain at the creative cutting edge,” continues Cooley.

New Exhibition Launches on First Friday, October 3 at 7 pm!

In its new exhibition entitled “Students/Teachers; Hopes/Fears,” Works/San Jose will showcase the talents of local Intermediate and High School students beginning First Friday, October 3, 2008 at 7 pm at 451 S. First St., San Jose, Calif. Works will hold a reception for the artists and their teachers on opening night.

“Students/Teachers; Hopes/Fears”

The installation explores hope and fear through the artistic lens of today’s and tomorrow’s artists expressing their views through a variety of media.

Conceived and coordinated by local art teacher Brande Barrett, the exhibition intends to provide a window to the depth of insight held by youth often marginalized in their schools and communities.

“With high-stakes testing and tight budgets, arts classes are the first to go, yet studies have shown time and again how the arts enhance children’s learning,” says Barrett.

Works’ artist in residence, Fanny Retsek continues to work on her “printstallation” available for public viewing anytime on the Market Street-side window of the Works’ gallery location at 451 S. First Street, San Jose.

We considered extreme measures for this flagrant act of careless creativity, but remembered that art only comes to those who “do”. Based on that rationale, the artists among us at Works/San Jose realized that “extreme measures” was likely a huge “don’t” and figured we’d simply ask promoters, performers and supporters to remember that their patronage at 451 S. First Street on Sat. Sept. 20 shows support for “Works/San Jose”.)

“Keep This Slip for Reference”

Printmaker Fanny Retsek will be Works’ “Artist in Residence” this fall, and inaugurating her residency with “Keep This Slip for Reference” an on-site print production art give-away on Friday, Sept. 5.

During the course of her residency, Retsek will work on an on-going “printstallation” entitled “Casualty,” which will show in the Market Street-side window of Works’ gallery location.

Currently, the Print Center Director and Master Printer at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Retsek works in all forms of print as well as drawing. Retsek’s work responds to the political issues spawned by our global consumer economy.

You can bet on this Brackett

Recording artist, musician and vocalist Benjamin Brackett will be performing a set at Works on Fri. Sept. 5 during its First Friday show. His latest album is entitled “Hear Ye, Hear Ye” (2007), which is available at record stores and also through his MySpace page.

Originally from Santa Cruz, Brackett once escaped Silicon Valley as (in his words) “computers and capitalists worked together to do away with every ranch and orchard left untouched by city boys and real estate developers.” He eventually wound his way back to the area through a cross country trip that also landed him in New Orleans and Nashville.

“works re:group”

Works’ current members’ exhibition, “works re:group,” showcases the art of more than 100 artists, which will continue to be on display through Saturday, Sept. 13. The unjuried format of the members’ exhibition has provided many aspiring community members their artistic debut setting Works/San Jose apart from art organizations in the area.

“works re:group,” launched on Aug. 1-a First Friday event that drew more than 800 visitors to the gallery than night, and opened Works’ doors to the community for the first time in 2008 at its 451 S. First Street location.

San Jose, Calif., July 14-Works/San José (Works) is regrouping and reopening at 451 South First Street, San Jose, Calif., with a relaunch of its annual members’ exhibition on Fri., Aug. 1, 2008 at 7 pm till late. The exhibition will last six weeks, extending through Sat., Sept. 13.

Works announced the “works re: group” exhibition this week, calling for members to refresh their memberships, participate in the exhibition with one “ready-to-hang” piece of art, and support gallery initiatives with membership and volunteerism.

The “works re: group” event on Fri., Aug. 1, will include a gala reception and showcase the core of the nonprofit organization’s mission: to be a creative laboratory dedicated to providing an environment where artists, audience, and ideas interact to expand the scope of cultural and artistic experience. The community-based art organization moved to 451 S. First Street in early 2007-a move that came with unexpected real estate, regulatory and financial demands that prevented the organization from extending its mission to the community.

“We’re past the major hurdles that have been weighing the organization down, and now is a great time for the community to get involved,” says Steve Cooley, president of Works’ board. “Works is what you put into it. We hope people will renew their memberships and show a piece of art in our members’ exhibit.”

One such way includes a call to build support through membership with basic rates reduced to $25/ year. Works is also extending a call to volunteers, whose help is needed for the installation and also to gallery sit during the exhibition hours from August 1 through September 13. Interested volunteers are urged to email gallery@workssanjose.org to learn more.

“While a handful of people give very generously of their creativity and time, and overall individual donations are up-we’d also like to see a boost of monetary support,” continues Cooley.

works’ art submission specs

Each member of Works is invited to place one work of art into the exhibition, as space is limited for this popular exhibition. Each single piece must be ready to hang (framed/mounted with all hanging hardware).

• Wall pieces must be limited to 24 inches in width by 24 inches in height;
• Sculptural pieces must be limited to 24 inches in width and depth. Please include instructions for pedestals, suspensions, or any other special display requests.
• Performance artists, who would like to present a work during the reception, are asked to email Works (at gallery@workssanjose.org) by 4pm on July 26 to reserve space.

Works also requests a resume and artist statement to accompany submitted artwork. Exhibition entry form and exhibition agreement can be completed when you deliver your work or can be downloaded at www.workssanjose.org.

All work must be hand-delivered to 451 South 1st Street on Thursday, July 24, 6 – 8 pm, or Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26, noon to 4 pm. (No artwork can be accepted after 4 pm, July 26.)

At the end of the exhibition, pieces will be available for pick-up on Saturday and Sunday, September 13 – 14, from 4 – 6 pm.

Works/San Jose Opens New Exhibition
California to Bangkok and Back: An Ongoing Artistic & Cultural Exchange of Faculty Artists.

San Jose, November 30, 2007 — Works/San Jose is pleased to announce – California to Bangkok and Back, its next exhibition, opening December 4th, 2007, and on view through January 19th, 2008 at 451 South First Street, San Jose, Calif.

In August 2007, a three-week residency and workshop hosted by Silpakorn University in Bangkok Thailand, included three San Jose State University faculty artists who were invited to participate as part of a larger group of artists from several California Universities. The artists worked in Bangkok, alongside faculty artists from Thailand in the production of a major exhibition which opened in September 2007 at the Art Centre at Silpakorn University.

This exhibition at Works/San Jose represents the California portion of the ongoing exchange of Thai and California artists which was begun a number of years ago by art faculty from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly.) It includes work from all of the artists who have participated in the latest exchanges. Four of these Thai artists have just recently completed residencies at San Jose State and at Cal Poly.

Working in a wide variety of media, the artists have created an exhibit based on artistic and cultural exchange and addressing the theme of “world environment” as uniquely interpreted through the distinct minds and media of each of the nineteen artists. Works/San Jose is honored to be hosting the “exclusive, North American premiere” and engagement.

A Curatorial talk with Professors May, Middlebrook, and Goodwin-Guerrero will take place December 13th, 7:00pm at the Works/San Jose gallery located at 451 South First Street in San Jose. This discussion about the artists’ work and experiences in Thailand during the exchange is free and open to the public.
